It can take time to get to know a learner with complex additional needs. If we think ahead and have strategies in place to reduce the time this takes we can ensure a smooth transition into our classroom, increased engagement with appropriate learning activities.


1 pm Admissions and virtual tea/coffee to start the session

1.05 pm Welcome & introduction – Warm-up session  

1.15 pm Session 1: Getting off to a good start.

Carol considers the importance of creating a smooth transition into the new school year and how getting to know your new pupils quickly has a postive impact on outcomes over the whole school year.  

1.30 pm Session 2:  Gathering Baseline Sensory Information

Understanding the sensory abilities of your learners is key to delivering an appropriate and effective curriculum.

Richard will look at collecting this crucial information for  vision, hearing & touch.  This will offer a framework for your baseline information gathering.  One autism specific example and one complex learning needs example will be offered.

2.10 pm Session 3: Observation as a key strategy for gathering information.

We present a brief overview of key issues in successful observation strategies and then collectively we will try a practical example.

2.25 pm COFFEE BREAK and mini online learning course 

3pm Discussion of key points from online learning course 
3.15 pm Session 4: Working in partnership

This session will look at how to triangulating your gathered information with that from other sources ie parents/carers and other professionals.

3.30 pm Session 4: Quick fire: ideas ideas ideas!

Richard and Carol will co-present this lively session where lots of ideas, resources and links are quickly presented to the group. As always, the focus will be practical and easy to replicate ideas so that you can put new things into your own work situation with relative ease.

3.50 pm Q & A session 

Delegates to put questions in chat so that any unanswered live can be followed up after the session.

4pm Plenary, thank you and end of session!

Who should attend?

This will be appropriate for classroom practitioners from special schools and colleges, mainstream settings with specialist SEN provision and early years settings, who are working with pupils with complex learning needs and/or autism.
