Thurs – 3 September 2020 12.45pm – 4pm

Sat – 5 September 2020 9am – 12.15pm

The transition from home to school may be more complex this Autumn than previously due to the unprecedented disruption education has faced since March 2020.  As learners return to the classroom, Richard Hirstwood and Carol Allen consider the importance of  providing consistent simple sensory opportunities for learners using targeted sensory tools.  This course will look at how to use sensory resources to engage, re-connect and enthuse learners whilst providing educators with a pathway to curriculum.

Session 1:  Transition and Curiosity – a new approach?

Session 2:  In the moment planning when working with sensory resources: key issues for effective outcomes.

Session 3  Impact Ideas:  Richard and Carol will co-present this lively session where lots of ideas, resources and links are quickly presented to the group. As always, the focus will be practical and easy to replicate ideas so that you can put new things into your own work situation with relative ease.

with Clive Smith and Richard Hirstwood.

Tues – 1 September 2020 9am – 12.15pm

Fri – 4 September 2020 12.45pm – 4pm

As pupils transition back to full time schooling, Clive Smith explores how sensory approaches can be used to calm and support pupils as they settle back into expected routines and behaviours.  This course offers a structured combination of theory and practice which will both inform and enable your practice.

Session 1: What is Challenging behaviour? This session will explore what exactly we mean by the term challenging behaviour.  Is how we define such behaviour crucial to how we manage it?

Session 2   Anxiety and Challenging Behaviour.  This session will consider the impact of anxiety on learners with SEND, particularly in times of change.  The links between anxiety and behaviour will be discussed.

Session 3:  Practical sensory approaches to support challenging behaviour during transition.  In this session,  Clive will introduce 3 practical strategies you can use to influence and support pupils’ behaviour as they return to school based routines.

Every learner needs sensory stimulation which, if it is personalised for them, can be incredibly engaging and effective. But is your classroom environment responsive enough to meet a variety of sensory needs?  Does your classroom support you in implementing a sensory approach? This course will consider the key elements of a sensory classroom and how you can improve the range of sensory opportunities on offer for your learners.

Session 1:  What are the Key Elements of a Sensory Classroom?

Session 2:  Available, Appropriate, Accessible and Achievable

Session 3  Impact Ideas:  Richard and Carol will co-present this lively session where lots of ideas, resources and links are quickly presented to the group. As always, the focus will be practical and easy to replicate ideas so that you can put new things into your own work situation with relative ease.

Fri – 4 September 2020 9am – 12.15pm

Sensory loss affects many learners with severe learning difficulties and when you are teaching so many learning opportunities can be missed due to a lack of understanding of their effects on learning and teaching. This course will discuss what the implications of sensory loss are in educational activities.  With a focus on visual and hearing loss, there will be a combination of information and practical strategies to inform and develop your practice.

Session 1:  Vision and Education.  This session will support your understanding of visual loss in the classroom.  We will explore different visual impairments to help you realise where barriers to learning might arise. Visual stimulation techniques to improve the brain’s understanding of any residual vision available to the learner will be shared.

Session 2:  Hearing and Education.  This session will focus on the effects of hearing loss on educational activities.  It will demonstrate how hearing loss can be missed by many practitioners in the classroom. Strategies will be shared to show how a learner can be encouraged to use their hearing and listening skills with fun and exciting sensory activities.

Session 3   Impact Ideas:  Richard and Carol will co-present this lively session where lots of ideas, resources and links are quickly presented to the group. As always, the focus will be practical and easy to replicate ideas so that you can put new things into your own work situation with relative ease.

The start of the new academic year in September 2020 will be a demanding time for many schools and educational settings as they prepare for the return of their learners and teaching colleagues – transitioning from lockdown back into the classroom.

COVID 19 has presented many challenges and continues to do so.  The ongoing pandemic means that access to face to face INSET is severely restricted.  However, it is still possible to access high quality virtual and interactive CPD for your staff!

To help staff teams to be super motivated, feel rejuvenated and more confident in these challenging times we are offering four half day online interactive courses with a difference!

Our ‘Back to Class’ courses won’t take up a full day and focus on:

  • Re-engaging learners in learning
  • The transition from homeschooling to classroom learning
  • Creating engaging sensory learning activities
  • Sensory approaches to calm and support pupils’ behaviour
  • Pupils’ mental health and wellbeing

Richard Hirstwood teams up with Carol Allen and Clive Smith to deliver this series of courses, which are repeated to give you greater flexibility throughout the week.  We’ve also added in two Saturday sessions too!

Each ‘Back to Class’ course consists of 3 taught sessions; practical tasks; a self-guided online learning session; discussion sessions; Q & A’s session and reflective practice.

You can buy access to a single event or all four events.  We hope to offer you the ultimate flexibility in matching the training needs of specific individuals or groups of staff within your school or setting to high quality, interactive and specific CPD.

Session Times: morning 9am – 12.15pm and afternoon 12.45pm – 4pm.

All four courses are certificated.

Who is Sensory September for?

Our ‘Back to Class’ courses are suitable for all educational practitioners:  individuals; teachers; teaching assistants; NQT’s; those new in post; or groups of staff e.g departments or key stages; or whole school INSET.

How can I book?

Booking multiple tickets.

You can make a group booking for your school or setting for one course, any combination of or all of the courses. To do this we will need a spreadsheet of delegates’ first name/last name and email address. This should be in .xlsx or .csv with separate columns for first name/last name and email address.

Please send one spreadsheet for each course you wish to book and clearly state the date and time of the event –  i.e ‘Using precision teaching for sensory learning’ on 2 September at 9am.

A Purchase Order Number is required to secure your group booking – email this with your spreadsheet/s to lois@hirstwood.com.

Booking single tickets.

You can book a single ticket online for one course, any combination or all of the courses.

If you already have an online learning account with Hirstwood Training:

To book,  log in to your account at https://online.hirstwood.com/ and choose the event you would like to register for.  Once paid for, you will see the event in your Dashboard.

If you do not have an online learning account with Hirstwood Training:

Click the ‘Book Now’ button for the event you wish to register for.  As part of this process you will create an account for you, or the delegate attending, using just a name and email address. It is crucial that this is the name and email address of the delegate.

How will the Sensory September ‘Back to Class’ events work?

To access a ‘Back to Class’ course each delegate will log in to their account at online.hirstwood.com – further joining information will be emailed.  Access to their own device (mobile/tablet/laptop/desktop) and wifi is required.  This means that staff can complete the course wherever they are: in school/at home or anywhere in between!  Our ‘live’ sessions will be delivered via Zoom, so delegates must have a Zoom account on the device that they will be using to access the course.

What do the ‘Back to Class’ courses cost?

Single Tickets: £45 inc VAT per delegate.

Multiple Tickets: Please contact Lois on lois@hirstwood.com for a quote for the number of tickets you require for the ‘Back to Class’ series.
