The Sensory Loss Bundle consists of three courses aimed at practitioners working with learners with a sensory loss or impairment. We cover the role of the senses in learning; types and causes of visual and hearing loss and their implications for learning in the classroom.
These courses are aimed at special schools and specialist provisions working with learners with complex needs; autism and SEND. They are suitable for teaching assistants, teachers, therapists and other educational practitioners.
Led by Richard Hirstwood who is passionate about enabling educators/practitioners to maximise the impact of delivering sensory learning opportunities, in a sensory room or other learning environments, with the resources available to them.
In ‘The Senses and Learning’ we look at each of our eight senses and how we use them. We explain how learners with sensory impairments and/or autism may experience barriers to learning and explore practical strategies to reduce these barriers, including the use of repetition. For learners with visual impairment, the environment can be challenging. In an ‘Introduction to Visual Impairment’, Richard looks at the types of visual impairment and their causes and considers the implications of these impairments for learning, providing practical ways to support learners with visual impairment in the classroom. Continuing with an ‘Introduction to Hearing Impairment’, Richard outlines how a hearing impairment can affect how a learner interacts with their environment. He explains the three basic types of hearing impairment, their causes and the implications for learning. There are practical strategies to support learners with hearing loss in the classroom.
